1.International Studies Association (ISA) - Call for Applications: ISA Research Workshop Grants 2024

The International Studies Association’s Research Workshop Grants Committee is pleased to announce the Call for Applications for Research Workshops for 2024 Research Workshop Grants (up to $2,500) encourage ISA members to collaborate in exploring significant research problems in the field, with emphasis on interdisciplinary research questions and new and diverse perspectives and approaches. 

Eligibility

• Research teams applying to the 2024 ISA RWG program should examine the merit review criteria and consider a project that is interdisciplinary, international, inclusive, and/or diverse by including early career/junior scholars, doctoral students, and scholars from a range of diverse communities and regions of the world, including Global South colleagues.
• All participating members in the ISA Research Workshop program must be ISA members and registered, if attending the in-person workshop at the 2024 ISA Annual Convention in San Francisco.

The 2024 ISA Research Workshop Grants are awarded at $2,500 per award in a fixed budget outlined in the Call for Proposals. The total funding available for 2024 Research Workshops is $50,000 (compared with $60,000 in 2022), with a limit of $2,500 per successful award.

2.Fritz Thyssen Foundation- Conferences

The Fritz Thyssen Foundation supports scholarly events, in particular national and international conferences with the aim of facilitating the discussion and analysis of specific scholarly questions as well as fostering cooperation and networking of scholars working in the same field or on interdisciplinary topics.

An application can be filed in the following areas of support: History, Language & Culture, The interdisciplinary field “Image–Sound–Language”, State, Economy and Society, Medicine and the Natural Sciences.

Eligibility

• Applications can only be filed by scholars from a school of higher learning or a non-profit research institution in Germany or foreign countries.
• Funding is basically reserved for projects that are related to the promotion areas of the Foundation and have a clear connection to the German research system.
• This connection can be established either at a personal level through German scientists working on the project, at an institutional level through non-German scientists being affiliated to German research institutes or through studies on topics related thematically to German research interests. 
• Applications can generally only be accepted if they come from universities or non-profit research institutions.
• Applicants must have a doctoral degree.
• The number of speakers should generally not exceed 15 to 20 persons.
• Congresses or larger conferences or sections within the framework of symposiums, annual conferences, etc., or purely doctoral workshops or summer schools cannot be supported.
• The foundation generally does not accept any applications for projects if applications are being filed with other institutions at the same time to ease the burden on its experts assessing applications. An application that is refused by another institution can be filed with the foundation along with a note explaining why it was refused
• It is generally not possible to revise applications that have been rejected by the Foundation.
• Financial resources can be applied to cover, travel expenses (rail travel 2nd class, air travel economy class), broken down according to speakers, costs of accommodation, meal costs for active participants/speakers, to a limited extent, generally up to € 1.000,- resources to defray incidental conference costs (printing of flyers and posters, conference support by student helpers or assistants, rental costs for conference rooms etc.) and childcare costs incurred during the conference (at least one offer must be attached).

Applications for support of a scholarly event can be submitted to the foundation by February 28^th, May 31^st, August 31 and November 30th of each year.

3.Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) - JIRCAS Visiting Research Fellowship Program FY2023

JIRCAS has been inviting promising researchers from research organizations in developing countries to conduct research work under the supervision of JIRCAS researchers to accelerate scientific research and advance the expertise of invited researchers.JIRCAS is now accepting applications for the JIRCAS Visiting Research Fellowship Program FY2023. This fellowship program will follow five (5) research themes at the JIRCAS Headquarters in Tsukuba or Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) in Ishigaki.

Eligibility

• Be a citizen of a developing country.
• Applicant must be currently employed in a research organization or university in the home country where he/she is actively engaged in research relating to agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. After the completion of the Fellowship, he/she must be willing to return to his/her country and continue the research at the same research institute or university.
• Hold at least a Master’s degree in a field related to socio-economics, natural sciences, or technology.
• Should be able to work exclusively on the research theme applied for
• Should be in good health.
• The applicant is required to have an adequate command of English and/or Japanese language.
• Should be endorsed by the authority of the institution where the applicant is employed or affiliated.

4.Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD)- Call for proposals - Innovation and Entrepreneurship on food security, climate and environment in Sub-Saharan Africa

The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) is accepting proposals to contribute towards innovation and entrepreneurship in Sub-Saharan Africa on food security, blue economy, climate adaptation, marine litter, renewable energy and clean cooking solutions, and aquaculture.

This call is directed toward two areas:

• Stimulate incubators, accelerators, and SME investment funds (with a focus on early-stage companies) that will mobilize knowledge and private capital for start-ups/SMEs companies in Sub-Saharan Africa.
• Risk-reducing measures with banks/financial intermediaries that can scale up innovations (e.g. end-user finance) and/or improve access to credit for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) which have the potential to scale up innovation

Eligibility

• Eligible recipients for this call for proposals are private actors in Norway and in recipient countries. Priority will be given to accelerators, incubators, SME investment funds for TA facilities, commercial banks, and non-bank financial institutions, including guarantee funds.
• The primary end target group is the population in Sub-Saharan Africa, with priority to Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Ghana, and Malawi.
• For this particular call, the following recipients will not be prioritized: Multilateral, governmental, civil society organizations, Academic and research institutions.  However, such institutions may be partners in the project alongside companies/funds dedicated to incubation and acceleration and financial institutions.

5.Short Scientific Visit Grant 2023 - International Union of Forest Research Organizations

In 2023, The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) Special Programme for Development of Capacities is offering a limited number of grants of up to EUR 5 000 for Short Scientific Visits specifically for early career scientists¹affiliated with IUFRO organisations who are employed at an institution in an economically disadvantaged country and reside in an economically disadvantaged country to visit a forest research organisation overseas. 

The goals for the grantee are broad and could include for example, skills development, establishing productive relationships with scientific peers in the host country, using the visit to benefit their own research, and, if possible, publishing of scientific material. The specific duration of the short scientific visits will be dependent on the complexity of the proposed projects, the location of the visit, and the availability of leveraged funding sources. 

Eligibility

• Early Career Scientist – is a scientist who has completed their MSc or PhD degree in forestry or related fields, is 35 years old or younger, and who is locally affiliated with an institution of research and higher learning in his/her respective home country. 
• All countries pertaining to the World Bank's list of low-income economies and lower middle-income economies fall within the category of economically disadvantaged countries.

6.African Export Import Bank (Afreximbank) - Research Sabbatical Programme opportunities

The Afreximbank Research Sabbatical Programme offers individuals from academic or research institutions the opportunity to undertake relevant research contributing to the Bank’s intellectual leadership in fulfillment of its mandate. 

The Bank is seeking professionals who are interested in conducting research in the areas of intra-African trade and investments, including Intra-African Trade & AfCFTA Implementation, Africa’s industrialization & export development, trade finance leadership, financial sustainability and/or any other areas that are relevant to the Bank’s mandate.

Eligibility

• Open primarily to senior lecturers / senior researchers from recognized Universities, research institutions or similar organisations. The programme is highly competitive and entry shall be based on merit.
• Applications are open to nationals of African countries and Caribbean Community countries.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of the Bank’s other official languages will be an added advantage (French, Arabic, or Portuguese).
• Ready to commit to the Bank for a period of one (1) calendar year on a non-renewable basis.

7.International Association of University Libraries (IATUL)-International Research and Study Programme

Each year the International Association of University Libraries offers a grant of up to € 4,000 to staff from member libraries to travel to other member libraries for a period of at least two weeks to investigate current issues of importance to IATUL libraries. Applications may be made by any staff member at an IATUL member library with the support of the university librarian. Only one application for a grant can be made from one member library in each calendar year. 

Eligibility

• Applications from all over the world are eligible
• The application must set out the purpose of the visit, the benefits of the study programme and include a schedule, budget and enclosed letter of support from the university librarian
• Applications must include a communication strategy that outlines how the findings of the study programme will be disseminated, including reporting after the tour via a report, blog, presentation or publication to the IATUL membership
• The IATUL Board determines the amount of the grant with an upper limit of  € 4,000 on the recommendation of the selection panel
• Within three months of the conclusion of the study programme, the grant holder must submit to the IATUL Office a brief report on the conduct and outcomes of the grant. The grant holder is encouraged to publish the findings in the professional literature and in their institutional repository and may be invited to make a presentation to an IATUL conference or other events
• The study at the hosting library must be concluded one year after the project is officially approved by the IATUL Board of Directors.

8.Wellcome Trust- Wellcome Career Development Awards

Wellcome Trust invites applications for Wellcome Career Development Awards. This scheme provides funding for mid-career researchers from any discipline who have the potential to be international research leaders. They will develop their research capabilities, drive innovative programmes of work and deliver significant shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health, and well-being.

Eligibility

• You can apply for a Wellcome Career Development Award if you are a mid-career researcher and you are ready to lead a substantial and innovative research programme.
• Research can be in any discipline – including science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), experimental medicine, humanities and social science, clinical/allied health sciences, and public health.
• Applicant must have completed one or two substantial periods of research after your initial training. 
• Applicant must have made important contributions to your area of research
• You must have sponsorship from an eligible host organization in one of the following: the UK, the Republic of Ireland, or a low- or middle-income country (apart from India and mainland China).

A Wellcome Career Development Award provides a salary for the grant holder (if required) and research expenses. The award usually lasts for 8 years but may be less for some disciplines, such as humanities and social science

9.Society for Army Historical Research (SAHR)-University Research Grants (URGs)

URGs are only granted for research that relates to the British Army or to the Land Forces of the British Empire and the Commonwealth. This includes any aspect of the Army and its activities, including reserve or auxiliary units, (Militia, Yeomanry, Fencibles, Volunteers or Home Guard), or the offices and institutions which supported them. This also includes the armies of the countries of the British Empire or Commonwealth including forces maintained by non-Crown bodies within the Empire, such as the Honourable East India Company, or forces allied to and forming an integral part of the land forces operating on behalf of the Crown (North American Indians, for example).

Eligibility

• Applications are welcomed worldwide from any student who is currently studying at a University or similar institution.
• Grants are made for research that relates to the British Army or the Land Forces of the British Empire and the Commonwealth.
• Each year the grants consist of one up to £1000

10.European Commission- MSCA Doctoral Networks 2023

These doctoral programs will respond to well-identified needs in various R&I areas, expose the researchers to the academic and non-academic sectors, and offer training in research-related, as well as transferable skills and competencies relevant for innovation and long-term employability (e.g. entrepreneurship, commercialization of results, Intellectual Property Rights, communication). Proposals for doctoral networks can reflect existing or planned research partnerships among the participating organizations.

Eligibility

To be eligible for funding, applicants must be established in one of the eligible countries;

• The Member States of the European Union, including their outermost regions
• The Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs)  are linked to the Member States

11.Anders Ericsson Dissertation Research Grant - American Psychological Foundation (APF)

The K. Anders Ericsson Dissertation Research Grant supports one annual $10,000 grant for dissertation research in the general area of expertise and skill acquisition, with a preferred focus on applications of the expert performance approach and/or the impacts of deliberate practice in diverse domains of skill. 2023 research priority topic: Expertise and skill acquisition, broadly defined, with a special interest in proposals that use process tracing methods, the expert-performance approach, or a deliberate practice framework to understand the superior skill. The amount awarded to this dissertation is $10,000.

• APF encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds with respect to age, race, color, religion, creed, nationality, ability, sexual orientation, gender, and geography.

12.French Development Agency (AFD) - Call for Research Expressions of Interest; Commons and Citizen Participation from a Social and Environmental Justice Perspective

This call is dedicated to research projects that address the contribution of the commons to democratic issues and citizen participation.

Research questions will be addressed through the lens of social and environmental justice. This call is dedicated to teams of researchers and social actors engaged both in the production of new research and in a public policy dialogue with public actors, at an appropriate level (central, deconcentrated, decentralized).

Eligibility

• AFD encourages applicant teams to call on a variety of partners to meet the requirements of this call. The application should specify the team's lead institution: it can be an academic institution (university, research center, laboratory, think tank, etc.) or a social actor that would lead/facilitate the public policy dialogue
• Sectors involved: All types of commons can be studied: land-based commons, urban commons, social commons, cultural commons, digital commons, knowledge commons, ecological commons, etc.

The research projects will have to be based on empirical analyses allowing for highlighting and analyzing the existing commons.

The budgets requested by each research project proposal should not be less than EUR 30,000 and not exceed EUR 200,000. Co-financing is encouraged.

13.Society for Mucosal Immunology (SMI)- Technique-sharing travel grants

This grant is to help researchers within the Society for Mucosal Immunology ( SMI) to better learn from their peers by supporting travel grants to learn techniques from other mucosal immunologists

Eligibility

• A description of the travel plans, including a short overview of the project, a description of the technique to be learned, and how it will help the project (maximum length: 1-page)
• CV of the applicant and, if different, of the person to travel
• Statement of consent from the hosting researcher
• Letter of support from the principal investigator in case of a direct application by the trainee
• Preliminary budget and explanation of budget ($1,500 is the maximum amount, with exceptions)
• This program is eligible for members of SMI. Principal investigators may apply for the travel of lab members, as well as for their own travels. In the case of a direct application of trainees (which is preferred), a letter of support provided by the principal investigator is required. Priority will be given to applications in which both the visiting scientist and host are active SMI members.
• New applicants must upload their CV/Resume at the time of application.

14.African Economic Research Consortium (AERC)- AERC-World Bank Visiting Scholars Program 2024 Call for application

The newly established AERC-World Bank visiting scholars programme is central to the collaboration between the two institutions.AERC invites its network researchers and faculty to submit an expression of interest to participate in the AERC-World Bank visiting scholars program. The fellowship programme will enable participants to spend time at the World Bank, work on their own research relevant to economic development in Africa, and work with the World Bank’s researchers to develop, especially those in the Africa Region. The visiting scholars will be expected to be part of the AFRCE team; attend AFRCE-led activities; benefit from capacity-building efforts being organized by AFRCE, including collaboration with scholars and peers doing analytical work on World Bank Regional Flagship Studies; interact with the World Bank’s researchers and fully utilize the World Bank’s resources

Eligibility

• Must be an AERC researcher, including researchers from the AERC collaborative PhD programme CPP);
• Must have an active AERC research project at least at interim/post field stage or final research paper stage; and
• The research project must be pertinent to the research agenda of the World Bank Africa Region, and imperatives for sustained African development.
• Women are especially encouraged to apply.

15.Right Sharing of World Resources (RSWR) - Apply for a Grant

The Right Sharing of World Resources (RSWR) is providing seed grants to small grassroots organizations to implement women-led, income-generating projects in Kenya.

Eligibility

• In Kenya, all groups must be self-directed by the women beneficiaries themselves.
• The leadership and management must come from within the group.
• The group cannot be formed or managed by outside coordinators.

16.University of Edinburgh- Centre for Research Collections Fellowships

• Applicants from employees of Universities and other organizations engaged in research from around the world.
• Applicants must be employed for purposes including investigative research and have a suitable project or study to undertake using a specific collection.
• Applicants must have been awarded a doctorate at the time of application, and normally within the last five years.
• Applicants should not have held a previous Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies
