SUMMARY

DR. CAROLYNE NJOKI MUIRU is a CONSULTANT ANESTHESIOLOGIST, INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE SPECIALIST.  
Dr. Njoki holds a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of surgery; University of Nairobi (UON), Master of Medicine ; Anesthesiology (UON), Fellowship Intensive Care Medicine WFSA/ASSUIT university EGYPT.
Currently Dr. Njoki is a LECTUTRER at the DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY, Faculty of HEALTH SCIENCES, EGERTON UNIVERSITY. She is the current exam officer for the department of Surgery.  She is currently pursuing her PHD in collaboration with Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) Critical Care Asia/Africa network.

She is  a consultant ANESTHESIOLOGIST and INTENSIVIST at NAKURU COUNTY REFFERAL AND TEACHING  Hospital, and has spearheaded several protocols and policies concerning anesthesia and critical care practice. These include introduction of the Nakuru county refferal and teaching hospital critical care and preanesthetic review form-2022 . Through her work she was recently appointed by the hospital administration as acting head of department in anesthesia and critical care to streamline these services. Dr. Njoki has participated and spearheaded several other projects geared towards improvement of clinical practice in the hospital. These include the stakeholder workshop- PITS Kenya-2022, Hostile Environment Surgical Safety Training; David Knott Foundation -2019, Safe Inter and Intrahospital ventilated patient transfer; donation of two comprehensive care ventilators by Gradian Health Systems Inc - 2018, Advanced Laparascopic Surgery; International Medical Exchange-2017, Awake Craniotomy;University of Toronto-2015 and Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia workshop; Kenya Society of Anesthesiologists-2015.  

Dr. Njoki has initiated several impactful ongoing research projects at the hospital.These include the Pathways for Innnovation in Blood Transfusions in Kenya; PITS-Kenya, a research collaboration funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) in collaboration with Pitsburg University (USA) and Strathmore University-Kenya. She also spearheaded the implementation of the Nakuru Hospital digital critical care registry, a collaboration between the Critical care Society of Kenya (CCSK), Mahidol Oxford Reasearch Unit (MORU) and Critical Care Asia Africa Network. Through the regisrty she is currently pursuing her PHD in a critical care related field, and participation in the ongoing BREATHE trial- Harvard University/Wellcome Trust and the multicentre study on Organization of Staffing and Resources in critical care units in Kenya. Dr. Njoki has a wealth of experience in proposal writing that has enabled the surgery department purchase trauma training equipment through the small grants by  Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) international small grants opportunity- 2018. She has undergone training in epidemiology  in global health medicine; University of Washington- 2022,Ethics in Human subjects research HHS Gov- 2021, Advance cardiac and life support; American Heart Association- 2021 , Certificate of good practice in ethics and research TREE university of Hong Kong- 2020, Leadership and management in health University of Washington - 2018 and Innovative teaching methodologies University of Nairobi and Maryland University-2013. 

Dr. Njoki has three publications as first author in the peer reviewed Kenya Society of Anesthesiology Journal, and three as a collaborator in multicentre international studies; the Covid Surg Collaborative 2021 and the African Surgical Outcomes Studies (ASOS) 2019. 

Dr.Njoki has been facilitated to present scholarly articles in two international conferences at the Covid Circle and Covid 19 clinical research coalition event- Wellcome Trust London 2022, and the All African Anesthesia conference ;AAAC WFSA; Abuja Nigeria 2017. She has also presented three scholarly articles in peer reviewed paper presentations at the Kenya Society of Anesthesiologist (KSA) in  2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019.

Dr. Njoki is a founding fellow and the current program director of the College of Anesthesiologist of Northern, Eastern and Southern Africa (CANECSA) at the Nakuru county refferal and teaching hospital, the Secretary of the Critical Care Society of Kenya (CCSK), program coordination commitee member College of Surgeons of East Cantral and Eastern Africa (COSECSA) and  Fellow/member of the World Federation Society of Anesthesiologists (WFSA). She has also served in the editorial board on the Kenya Society of Anesthesiologist Journal, and was recognized in the acknowledgment section for her contribution in the development of the gazetted National Anesthesia Guidelines 2016. She served as the continous medical education coordinator for the Kenya Medical Association Nakuru Branch and spearheaded introduction of emergency care training in the county during her tenure- 2017 to 2019. She is registred by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Medical Council as a specialist.

Dr. Njoki has supported the Nakuru hospice Charity walks-2017 and 2019, represented the Kenya Medical Association in Strengthening law and policy at the county heath commitee meeting 2018, Egerton University medical student associaton blood drive 2021 and continues offering mentorship and opportunities for undergraduate university student involvement in research.
